Video Installation screen 7: Xenia Sova
Text Panel
hello, I’m Xenia Sova, I immigrated from Russia.
I remember one day when I was little I asked my grandmother what “Zhid” means. She said it was a curse, a derogatory term for “Jew.”
Then I asked her, “What’s a Jew?” She shrugged and smiled and said: “Me and your grandpa, for instance.”
That’s when I discovered I belong to this nation. Then she made me a salami and cheese sandwich and said she’d ask my grandpa to take me to the synagogue.
What does Judaism mean to me?
It’s a painting, a painting made up of many different, small parts, but put together they create a complete, inseparable whole and each of us is an integral part of that whole, including me.
