Artifact: Sheets of a Torah Scroll

Sheets of a Torah Scroll
Spain, late 13th or early 14th century
Ink on gevil (parchment)

These sheets, which survive from a Torah scroll, contain chapters 28–46 of Genesis. Unlike today’s Torah scrolls, specific letters in this scroll are decorated with special ‘crowns’ (tagin) or written differently and with embellishments, in accordance with traditions that were practiced in the past.
