hello, my name is Lawrence Dreyfuss.
I was sitting on the New York City subway the other day, when my friend Rachel, also Jewish, asks me if I really feel antisemitism.
“Not really,” I pondered aloud.
“I feel more connected to content, “books, movies, television shows “aimed at young American audiences “than I do at Jewish audiences.”
I think this is kind of indicative of my experience as a Jew living in the United States.
Sure, if you ask me directly, I won’t lie, but it sometimes feel like an identity I can leave at home when it doesn’t suit me.
Yes, I go to Jewish cultural events, making small talk about…our fledgling knowledge of hebrew, “which Jewish summer camp did you go to, “do you know so-and-so from such-and-such?”
And yeah, I’ll probably marry someone Jewish one day, but it has less to do with a connection to a religion, and more to do with a shared point of view.
And making my parents happy.
