A hebrew author born in Lithuania in 1854. She studied hebrew and religious subjects in a cheder (Jewish elementary school) together with boys. She subsequently learned German and was drawn into the spirit of the enlightenment. Foner began writing at the end of the 19th century and initially wrote historical fiction. her later works dealt with her childhood in the city of Dvinsk and the tensions between tradition and progress. As an author, she had to fight for her place in the world of Jewish enlightenment and literature, which at the time was the exclusive domain of men.
