Hi. I’m Hanna from North West London.
Like many Jewish people in the UK, I grew up in the Modern Orthodox movement, and I thought Judaism was just going to synagogue or having a Friday night dinner. But as much as I wanted to be Jewish, I couldn’t bring myself to be religious. Then, when I was 16, joined a youth movement, and came to Israel for a month. And it was a watershed moment for me. I started making sure that my choices were exactly that, my choices.
Now, I keep kosher not because I believe that Hashem told me to, but because that is what my family has been doing for 3,000 years. I practice Judaism every day of the week. From social action to fighting for justice. But on Shabbat, I go out with my friends. I worry that traditional Jewish values are coming into conflict with facts of life for my generation, such as global digitalization, or gender equality.
But for me, I found an identity that marries both my identities, as a Jew and as a Brit.
