Video Installation screen 2: Moshe Shamir
Text Panel
Hi, my name is Moshe Shamir, I’m 46 years old, I live in Tel Aviv, I have two children, Ido and Naomi.
I was raised in a Haredi home. My father is a rabbi with a congregation. In fact, he has two congregations. When I was ten years old, we moved to Belgium. There I truly experienced being a Jew. I grew up in a community where we spoke Yiddish, and outside we spoke Flemish. I was raised on values of giving and accepting those who are different. I also experienced antisemitism. One time I went down
for Selichot prayers at 04:00, and a person who had just walked out of a bar spat in my face.
When I was 17 we moved back to Israel, back to the Israeli way of life, and I chose the path of enlisting in the military and being Israeli, and not Haredi. After that I studied mathematics, computers, philosophy, Buddhism, yoga instruction. At my house you’ll find Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, and Rabbi Kook, as well as the Dalai Lama. What they have in common is that they all accept those who are different, and support them.
That’s Judaism to me.
