hello, I’m Denise Weishof and I’m from the city of Curitiba, Brazil.
My grandparents left Eastern Europe before WWII, and came to Brazil looking for new opportunities and to escape anti-Semitism. Both my parents and I were born in Brazil, and my bond with Judaism at home came about through the Jewish holidays, mainly Passover, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and also through the Yiddish we often heard and the dishes that had a taste of Europe.
I grew up in an environment where I wasn’t very active, but I visited Israel where I studied hebrew, I was trained as a teacher in Israel and now I work in the Jewish community as a teacher and as a coordinator at the Holocaust museum in my town.
The question is: Am I a Brazilian Jew?
A Brazilian-Israeli?
I believe my story isn’t over yet, one day I may find myself back in Israel.
