In the 1970s 150,000 Jews living behind the Iron Curtain were permitted to make Aliyah. This at times involved the separation of families due to ideological differences. In the 1990s, after the fall of the Soviet government and the dissolvement of the Soviet Union, more than a million people made Aliyah.
