Years of Promise
This film consists of fragments of letters and diaries
from Europe and North Africa written in the late
1930s. They are read aloud in their original languages,
reflecting the everyday life of their authors – their
small joys, culture and leisure time. The writers have
no idea what the future holds. Yet we, the viewers,
know what is about to occur: The Holocaust

The interwar period saw the creation of a new Jewish culture in which the Jewish sources were combined with the richness of local customs. From Poland to Tunisia, from the United States to Eretz Israel – the Jewish world experienced a flourishing of art, philosophy, and ideology and with them new habits of dress, culture and entertainment, sports and leisure. And yet at the same time, the fascist ideology was also festering in Europe, giving rise to the Nazi party and bringing about a calamitous end to the years of hope…
