Must Know

The artist Friedrich Adler designed the Twelve Tribes Window (1919) as part of an agricultural training settlement (hachshara) synagogue at Markenhof in the Black Forest of Germany. The stained galss window was comissioned by the industrialist Konrad (Elchanan) Goldmann (1872-1942), who donated it to the Tel Aviv Museum in 1932.
Twelve Tribes Window is an excellent example of Art Deco design. Its repetitive angular and polygonal forms – and its vibrant and complex color scheme including yellow, green, sea-blue, purple and gray – render this a strong yet refined example of this style. The twelve tribes of Israel are presented in a unique sequence, running from left to right, that does not correspond to their grouping in the Bible.
