The Vulgate – Latin Translation of the Old
and New Testament (Sixtine Vulgate)
Venice, Italy, 1669
Museum Collection
The most important and common Latin translation of the sacred texts. Most of the translation was written by Jerome in the late 4th century. In 1546 the Catholic Church declared it the official and authoritative Bible translation. This act was part of its struggle against the Reformation and a response to the German Bible translation (The Luther Bible).
