Text: What the Seder Night and a Greek Symposium Have in Common

Text Panel

Following the destruction of the Second Temple,
it was no longer possible to offer the Passover sacrifice.
In the subsequent centuries, the Jewish sages instituted the Seder night as a substitute for the sacrifice.
Even though the highlight of the evening was recounting the story of the exodus from Egypt,
the atmosphere and nature of the occasion were inspired by the Greek symposium,
which was popular in hellenist culture.
