Text Panel

One of the most important changes produced by the enlightenment was that hebrew became a language which was also used to compose secular texts. A salient example was the first hebrew-enlightenment periodical named “HaMe’asef” that contained poems, articles and translations of German works.
During the same period, literary salons emerged in European society, which were usually organized by educated women who hosted intellectuals for social gatherings and joint study. henrietta herz, Dorothea Mendelssohn-Veit and Rahel Levin-Varnhagen were among the educated Jewish women who hosted some of the most prominent salons in Berlin. They later converted to Christianity.
