Christianity came into being in the Land of Israel about two thousand years ago. In the 4th century, following a period of persecutions, it became the official religion of the Roman Empire.
Christians relied on the Old Testament and considered themselves ‘Spiritual Israel.’ In their world, Jews were assigned the task of bearing witness to the truth of Christianity. It was permissible to humiliate and expel them in order to demonstrate what comes of a people who reject their messiah. It was forbidden, however, to kill them because Christians believed that in the end of days Jews would convert and once again be worthy of the grace of God.
