Similar to other ancient Jewish texts, the Babylonian Talmud is a collective work that was compiled in Babylonia in the 6th century CE.
Most of the Talmud is devoted to commentaries on the Mishnah and it reflects the halakhic (Jewish legal) worldview of the Babylonian sages of that period.
Apart from prescribing the halakha, the Talmud also touches on philosophy and on commentaries pertaining to different parts of the Bible. The authority of the Babylonian Talmud was established over the years and it became the major compendium that is taught in Jewish houses of study.
