The Shabbat (Sabbath) is one of the Jewish people’s most important symbols. The commandment to keep the Shabbat appears at the end of the description of the seven days of Creation – and is the fourth of the Ten Commandments.
There are several reasons for keeping the Shabbat. One is of a national-social nature: the Jews were slaves in Egypt and their God led them out to freedom. That is why the seventh day is sanctified. Another reason is of a universal nature: because God created the whole world in six days and rested on the seventh day, people are commanded to do so as well.
