Following the division of Poland, the Russian Empire became the major force in Eastern Europe and annexed many territories. During the years of its growing power, two prominent czarinas ruled Russia: Empress Elizabeth and Catherine the Great. Astute political decisions and successful military campaigns enabled both of them to lead the empire to significant achievements. Russia reached its height after the Napoleonic Wars when it became the second largest empire in the world.
