In January 1933, while the Weimar Republic in Germany was contending with an unprecedented economic recession, the National Socialist Party headed by Adolf Hitler won the elections. The new regime advocated reviving the German “national spirit” and expelling “foreign elements” whom it charged with stifling its growth. One of the ideological foundations of the Nazi regime was its race theory, which claimed that the Aryans (Germans) were the master race destined to rule the world.
