In the middle of the 13th century, following the defeat of the Crusaders, the Land of Israel was annexed to the Mamluk Sultanate. The country had strategic importance because the roads that passed through it connected different parts of the Sultanate. The Mamluks rehabilitated Jerusalem and the cities of Safed and Gaza gained in prestige.
The arrival of Nachmanides (Rabbi Moses ben Nachman) in the country contributed to the restoration of the Jewish community in Jerusalem. Other Jews settled in cities in the Galilee.
