When the Crusader armies reached the Land of Israel, Jews fought against them together with local Muslims. Following the Crusader victory, the Jewish community in Jerusalem was destroyed and many left the country. Throughout the Crusader period, there were only a small number of Jews in the Land of Israel and most of them lived in cities on the Mediterranean coast. Two Jewish travelers – Benjamin of Tudela and Pethahia of Regensburg – provided written accounts about the Jewish community at that time.
