The Zionist movement, which started out in the 1880s as an assortment of nationalist associations that fostered settlement in the Land of Israel, took shape following the establishment of the Zionist Organization in 1897. There were, however, other nationalist ideologies and organizations that competed with Zionism. The outcome was a stormy political controversy that gripped Jewish communities around the world in the first half of the 20th century.
