The Jewish calendar, like the Gregorian calendar, is divided into twelve months. However, whereas the Gregorian calendar is based only on the solar cycle, the Jewish calendar is based primarily on the lunar cycle. The basis for establishing the calendar is sanctifying the month (determining the first day of the month), which depends on the appearance of the new moon. Even so, the Jewish calendar also adapts itself to the seasons of the year, which are determined by the solar cycle.
