The French Revolution was accompanied by internal terror and wars between France and most European countries and brought an end to the rule of the monarchy. The Revolutionary Republic established in France espoused equality for all citizens and supported their right to take part in government.
The Republic lasted until Napoleon Bonaparte seized the reins of government in a coup. Napoleon embarked on a series of military campaigns, conquered large territories and his forces spread the ideas of the Revolution.
