The story of Tuvia the Milkman was published by Shalom Aleichem in Yiddish in 1894. Years later, the story was adapted into a play called Tevya starring Maurice Schwartz. It was one of the best-known and most acclaimed plays ever produced in Yiddish theater in New York. Its subsequent cinematic version was a huge success as well. The playwright, Joseph Stein, and the composer, Jerry Bock, created the musical Fiddler on the Roof, whose name was inspired by one of Marc Chagall’s paintings. Directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins and starring Zero Mostel, it debuted on Broadway in 1964. It was a big box office success and was staged countless times across the globe.
