The Dybbuk, S. An-Ski written in 1914, was first performed by the Vilna Troupe in Warsaw in 1920. The Dybbuk won widespread acclaim and became Yiddish theater’s ticket to the global stage.
In 1922, Habima Theater in Moscow staged The Dybbuk under the direction of Yevgeni Vakhtangov. The play later formed a cornerstone in the establishment of Israel’s National Theater. Most of the production’s success was attributed to Hanna Rovina due to her unforgettable portrayal of Leah. The Dybbuk was part of IIsraeli theatre repertoire for over fifty years – more than any other play in Israel.
