Islam, which is based on the Quran, originated in the 7th century in the Arabian Peninsula under the leadership of the Prophet Muhammad. It later spread to many other places. In the Middle Ages, Islam produced a magnificent culture, under whose aegis the sciences, arts, philosophy and poetry flourished.
Muslims defined Jews as the “People of the Book” and granted them the status of protected subjects (ahl al-dhimma). As a rule, Islam did not view Jews as a threat or as rivals and the Jews did not regard Islam as paganism.
