The Scientific Revolution is a name for a series of discoveries that occurred in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. Those discoveries produced a change in scientific and philosophical thought – and as a consequence, revamped Western culture. In the 18th century those trends matured in the form of the enlightenment. It was characterized by the emphasis placed on reason and freedom of thought and opposition to religious coercion by the Church.
The enlightenment provided a philosophical and ideological platform for both the American and French Revolutions and contributed to the growing power of the bourgeoisie and capitalist economy.
