As a rule, the status of women in the Jewish world was inferior to that of men. Women were usually engaged in household crafts and received less education than men – and even then had to rely on the goodwill of their families. Nonetheless, and despite all the legal prohibitions and restrictions, there were also women who took part in public life. They were active in business, studied Torah and performed as cantors. here are the stories of some of those women.
