Text: Stella Corcos

Text Panel

Stella Corcos (Duran) was born in 1858 to Abraham Duran and Rebecca Duran, who was a member of the prominent Montefiore family of London. When she came of age, Stella married Moses Corcos, a Jewish merchant from Morocco. She took advantage of her family ties with Claude Montefiore, a founder of the Agudat Ahim philanthropic association, and opened an english school named Kavod ve-Ometz in Mogador that was intended for underprivileged Jewish girls. The school promoted modern education that included theater studies as well as an immunization program. Stella also worked to improve living conditions in the Mellah, the Jewish ghetto.
