In his work, he asserted the importance of the concept or idea. The idea becomes the machine that makes the art. This concept redefines the role of the artist as a thinker rather than a craftsman. His wall drawings are executed by people who follow his instructions. This collaboration is the cornerstone of his work. For his wall drawings, the first of whice he made in 1968, LeWitt limited himself to conceiving and plannig the drawing, providing verbal instructions on a certificate and an accompanying diagram. The works are executed by assistants, and the look of the final work is shaped by the architecture of the site, the size and texture of the wall, and the individual or individuals producing the drawing. This rigorously conceptual process of realization ensurs that the autographic touch of the artist is wholly absent. LeWitt compared his instructions to musical scores, which are realized in a new way every time they are played. he is the composer of the piece and the team that executes the work is the orchestra. Sol LeWitt was also known to be a soft spoken, generous and kind man.
