A piyyut is a liturgical poem sung in synagogues and at joyous family occasions. It is prevalent mostly among Jews from Arab countries and North Africa and its popularity has grown in recent years. Children and adults, individuals and groups sing liturgical poems at gatherings and special concerts.
Cantorial music is the chanting of Jewish religious texts. In the last two centuries, cantorial music in Europe began to draw motifs from classical music. The status of a cantor is comparable to that of an artist who performs original melodies in concert halls.
