The Reconstructionist movement defines Judaism as an “evolving religious civilization” and views Torah and halakha solely as man-made products. The belief in God is replaced by a premise that there are powers and natural processes in the world that enable human beings to fulfill themselves morally. Religious customs are kept as long as they meet the test of rationality and morality.
The Reconstructionist movement maintains that the survival of Judaism in a modern and democratic society depends on its “reconstruction” in accordance with these principles – and also on the enhanced role of the synagogue and its becoming pivotal in the life of Jewish communities.
