Text: Rebelling Against the Empire

Text Panel

Jews rebelled against Roman rule three times: during the Great Revolt in the Land of Israel (66-73 CE),
the Diaspora Revolt (115-117 CE), which began in Alexandria and spread throughout the entire Middle East,
and the Bar Kokhba Revolt (132-135 CE).
In all three cases, the rebels prevailed at first and even managed to crush some Roman legions.
However, the victories were ultimately to the Jews’ detriment.
The vengeful response that came in their wake was devastating:
the Romans destroyed the Temple, slaughtered the insurgents and exiled large numbers of people.
