In Judaism, prayer is one of the main ways of worshipping God. It has two dimensions: a communal dimension and a private dimension. Praying in public is something which is done by the entire community (requiring at least ten people, a minyan(. It is a formal form of prayer that typically takes place at fixed times and places and the worshipper stands before God as part of the Jewish people. Praying in public is one of the peaks of fulfilling the covenant between the Jewish people and God.
A private prayer can be said while praying in public or it can be a spontaneous prayer that is not time or place dependent. The worshipper stands alone before God and speaks from his or her heart.
