The ‘Mitnagdim’ (opposers) consist of various subgroups. Their principal ethos is Torah learning and the Babylonian Talmud is the primary work they study, coupled with numerous volumes of commentaries. Studying a Talmudic passage in depth is the core of their scholarly pursuit. The Mitnagdim think that one can, and even should, study additional sources from the wealth of Jewish spiritual works, but their importance is secondary. For them, the ideal type is a perpetual scholar and their leaders are generally heads of yeshivas or renowned decisors of religious law.
