One of the distinctive historical traits of the Jews in Sepharad was their involvement in government. Among the most famous Jews were Hisdai ibn Shaprut (915-970), who served as foreign minister and finance minister, and Samuel Ha-Nagid (993-1055 or 1056), who served as minister of the army and Grand Vizier. A few centuries later, Don Isaac Abrabanel (1437-1508) served as finance minister under the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile.
