The major festivals in the Jewish calendar were established during different periods in the annals of the Jewish people. One can find holidays dating back to Biblical times, alongside holidays and festivals which are associated with historic events that occurred in other periods. The fact that all Jewish communities follow the same calendar – even though it has often entailed bitter disputes – is one of the factors that has preserved the unity of the Jewish people.
