Emma Lazarus

A poet, born to a well-established Sephardi Jewish family in New York in 1849. her talents as a sensitive poet were discovered at an early age. She helped Jewish immigrants from Russia acclimate to the United States. Inspired by her work with them, in 1883 Lazarus wrote her famous poem The New Colossus, which is now engraved on the Statue of Liberty in New York.
