Synagogues were traditionally the place not just for prayer but for all community activities.
There were classes for children and adults, economic and judicial dealings, and even the collection of money. The synagogue was a site of charity, and at times served as a soup kitchen for the community’s poor. It was also used for family celebrations and religious ceremonies.
