The 19th century was one of worldwide migrations. Many people could not find their place in their native homelands and chose to leave and start a new life elsewhere. These migrations were characterized by three major movements: from rural areas to cities, from Eastern Europe to Western Europe, and from the Old World to the New World.
The most popular migration destination of all was the United States – the Land of Opportunity. The American nation of immigrants opened its doors widely and masses of people flocked there.
