Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) was born in the U.S. and is considered one of the most influential classical musicians of the 20th century. he gained admiration as a conductor, composer, pianist, and educator. he was the musical director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted many leading international orchestras. he composed orchestral pieces, operas and musicals (including West Side Story), and music for dance, film and theater. Many of his works refer to Jewish motifs and sometimes even include texts from the Torah and prayers, such as his Symphony No. 3, “Kaddish.”
MASS is a musical theater work commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy as part of the opening performances of the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington D.C. in 1971
