American conductor and violinist. Born in New York, he began playing music at age 4, and made his public debut at age 7 with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. He toured Europe in 1927 and proceeded to a successful world tour in 1935, recording many of his solos and concertos. During World War II, he performed for the Allied forces and refugees. He started conducting during the 50s and founded the Menuhin Gstaad Festival in Switzerland in 1957. He established the Yehudi Menuhin School in London in 1963. After years of conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Menuhin assumed British citizenship in 1985 and was knighted. He also recorded jazz and Indian music.
