A Jewish lobbyist and philanthropist, nicknamed “HaSar” referring to the Hebrew honorific word and his English knighthood. He was born in Livorno, Italy, and educated in England. He co-founded a successful finance company, but in 1824, he quit most of his tasks in order to help Jews worldwide. In 1827, he visited Israel for the first time, returning 7 more. In 1837, he was appointed Sheriff of London, and was knighted in 1846. He served as President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews from 1835-1874. He visited many countries to improve the authorities’ treatment of Jews. He established Mishkenot Sha’ananim in Jerusalem and the Montefiore Windmill.
