American baseball player, born in New York. During his relatively short, 11 year career, he set many pitching records and established himself as one of the greatest pitchers of all time. He won the Cy Young best pitcher award three times, and was one of the first pitchers ever to throw a perfect game. In the 1965 World Series, Koufax decided not to participate in the first game because it was set on Yom Kippur. He returned to the series in game 2, leading the Dodgers to victory and winning the series’ MVP title. At 36, he was the youngest pitcher to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
