Danish-French painter, among the founders of impressionism and one of the most influential artists of French modern art. Born on the island St.Thomas in the Virgin Islands. His father was a wealthy Portuguese merchant and his early paintings depicted the Caribbean landscape and inhabitants. Sent as a youngster to boarding school in Paris and subsequently studied at the city’s Académie Suisse. Revolutionized painting together with his contemporary, Claude Monet. Their novel style was criticized by art critics but adopted eagerly by many artists. His followers include Paul Gauguin and Paul Cezanne, who called him “the first impressionist.” Many of his paintings are exhibited at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris.
