American broadcast journalist and host, among the first female television personalities. Walters was born in Boston to parents of Polish origin. Her father was an entertainment and club producer and manager. In 1961, after a short stint as a journalist assistant and CBS reporter, she joined NBC’s The Today Show as reporter and researcher. Within a year she became a reporter in charge of the research and edit of her assignments. Walters hosted several news and talk shows. Among her many interviewees were Boris Yeltsin, Indira Gandhi and Hussein of Jordan.
