The Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemet LeYisrael) was founded in 1901 to buy and develop land during the Ottoman Rule over then the land of Palestine. The fund is a non-profit organisation and since its establishment has planted over 240 million trees in Israel and owns about 13% of the total land of Israel.

Dunam or donum was an old Ottoman unit of measurement for land. It is equivilant to the english acre and represents the amount of land a group of oxen could walk in a day. The unit is outdated yet still in use in some areas previously ruled by the Ottomans.
