The author Alter Druyanov (1870-1938) began collecting Jewish jokes as part of a project that assembled cultural treasures of the Jewish people, initiated by H.N. Bialik in Odessa at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1931, following three decades of work, Druyanov published the jokes he collected in The Book of Jokes and Wit” – the book of books of Jewish humor.
