Alber Elbaz is an Israeli fashion designer who lives in Paris. he was born in 1961 to a Jewish family in Casablanca, Morocco, and during his childhood the family moved to Israel, settling in Holon. After finishing his military service, he studied at Shenkar College of engineering and Design in Ramat Gan. Over the years he has worked in well-known fashion houses around the world. In 1987 Elbaz emigrated to New York and for seven years worked under Geoffrey Beene, a well-known American fashion designer.
In 1996 he began working as a designer at the French fashion house of Guy Laroche. Elbaz, who was still unknown in the fashion world, stood out with his feminine fashion sketches. In 1998 Elbaz moved to work in the fashion house of Yves Saint Laurent where he designed women’s ‘ready-to-wear’ clothing. This was unlike the work he had done until then which had consisted of designing clothes specifically made to order.
In 2001 Elbaz was appointed artistic designer at the Lanvin fashion house in Paris, one of the oldest, most famous and elite fashion houses which was founded in 1909. he worked there for 14 years, and his lightweight female clothing designs have gained acclaim from leading fashion magazines.
Elbaz’s designs and achievements have been impressive. In 2005 he received the International Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. In 2007 Time Magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. In the same year he was given the French Legion of Honour. In 2014 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London.
