Model: “Tłomackie” The Great Synagogue

“Tłomackie” The Great Synagogue Tłomackie Street, Warsaw, Poland.

Must Know

Opened in 1878, it was destroyed by the Nazis in 1943. Today, the site is occupied by a high-rise building and includes the conference auditorium of the Jewish Historical Institute.

Synagogue regulations required all worshippers to be elegantly dressed and to pay large entrance fees. This provoked a public uproar as poorer Jews were effectively unable to pray at the synagogue. The harsh criticism eventually prompted the synagogue’s management committee to allow free admission to the synagogue several times a year.
